It. Um. Got a little long. Here's part two.

Joe was the only person who called him 'Patwick', and it was like a password for being his best friend.

Patrick! Loving Joe's lisp! (As do I, because, aw, seriously.) I love how he finds Joe perfect as he is, and in fact loves him all the more for his flaws. It shows how close they really are. Kids, no matter how well raised, are vicious, and this makes a show of the bond.

"Look, dude, you're not a fag, okay?"

"How do you know?"

Kevin didn't have an answer to that one. And if he was honest, he wasn't even sure he was right.

I like this exchange for what it is: a big brother comforting his little brother against something that neither one really understands. Again, a lot of people (usually without siblings themselves) over or under do the bond between siblings. This is real and spot on and makes you a little sick to think about, because, seriously, Kevin has no idea in the same way Patrick doesn't, but he's trying his best with out making it seem like he is.

"And they cut it off?"

"Yeah, but I was a baby, so I don't remember it."

"That's gross."

Joe just shrugged. "I get a party, though."

Ahahaha. Best lines of dialouge ever. Ahahaha.

"Do... um. Do you think it'd be like, too superweird if I kind of... kissed you?"

For a moment, Patrick stared up at the canopy of the tent waiting for the weird flip-flopping feeling in his stomach to stop. "Um... probably."

"Oh." Joe shrugged uncomfortably and started to shift back down to where he was laying before.

"But, y'know... I probably wouldn't mind if you did it anyway."

"Probably?"

Patrick just shrugged and nodded, but he carefully squeezed Joe's hand tighter, too. Mostly, he just ended up remembering that Joe breathing close to his face was the weirdest part and that neither of them really opened their mouths much. And that he'd forgotten how long Joe's eyelashes were until he nearly freaked out thinking they were a spider on his face. And that was it. He fell asleep with his nose pressed against Joe's cheek, and the next morning it was as if nothing had happened.

I love how awkward this interaction is. It's an awkward subject to a thirteen year old, especially when dealing with his best friend of the same sex. It's not going to be all "Oh yeah! Let's go!" and be spectacular. I love that the kiss itself isn't anything special (obviously it is, but y'know) an is really just sort of awkward and simple. (My thoughts during my first kiss were "Is this it? Is this what it's all about?" and it was weird and felt goofy. You caught that better than anyone else I've read has.)

Also? The line about Joe's eyelashes feeling like spiders. Silly and cute and funny. Oh, Patrick.
