Author's Notes: A lot of the historical references in this fic tie-in the phenomenal mini-series Band of Brothers, but it is in no way a cross-over as the actual military operations mentioned were genuine actions of the 502nd PIR, sister regiment to the legendary 506th.

This is very much a case of 'if they'd lived in the 40s' rather than 'Fall Out Boy go back to the 40s': getting these kids to sound like themselves while using 1940s terminology is just plain obnoxious. I hope I managed it, and, if it helps, I found myself picturing Grand Theft Autumn-vid Patrick when writing this. I also thought it would be really fun to have Patrick doing one of the things he's sworn he'd never have the nerve to do in real life.

I did try to find out as much as humanly possible about the Arma tour and the line up when Joe subbed for them, but it wasn't easy, so I went with what was most workable and what didn't freak me out for personal reasons. I've heard rumours that Joe played bass on that tour, but that was Chris's instrument and there's footage of them together on stage, so it makes no sense. Sincere apologies for the three month delay between chapters. I have been working insanely hard on a few other fics (one of which is already at 20k words) and there have been up to seven versions of this chapter written – one of which was 6k words. But we're moving on, finally, so I hope this is worth the wait.

Additionally, I've been listening to a lot of non-FOB stuff lately which has really clicked for me with this fic, so I might start using other band's lyrics to head up the chapters. Hope it's not too jarring.

This chapter almost never happened. It was born from a 'deleted scene' from the text which will be chapter fourteen, which I showed to

heyginger who then convinced me it needed to exist. Ultimately, this is a bonus chapter written, for the most part, in the space of two days.

Chapter fourteen is being reworked to accommodate some information which was shifted around a little, and should be completed very soon.

IMPORTANT: At the end of this fic are some references to a show called Mork & Mindy. For those who are ~~young enough to make me feel old~~ too young to remember the show (even as reruns in the 1990s), Mork was a mildly insane alien from the planet Ork, played by Robin Williams. He arrived on Earth in a space craft shaped like an egg and drank through his finger. It'll all make sense in about 7,000 words time, I promise.

Well, so much for 'very soon', right? But I have four documents containing versions of this chapter – I've probably scrapped as many words as I've posted, including three scenes (in the van, in a motel and at a branch of Denny's). The good news is that this is a tipping-off point for the next era of the fic. Huge things are coming.

I want to warn people, as well, that there is a fairly offensive anti-Semitic term used late in this chapter, which I don't condone at all, but which was relevant to the context of the scene. I hope that any Jewish readers will understand that no offence is intended to them in using the word, and that it is used by a 'villain' of the piece, rather than a respected character. ♥
